Sunday Jazz Series with the Steve Rudolph Quartet featuring Jonathan Ragonese

This Sunday’s show will be the Steve Rudolph Quartet featuring Jonathan Ragonese.

 

​​JONATHAN RAGONESE - Composer-Arranger-Saxophonist, is a native of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. He moved to New York City in 2007 to attend the Manhattan School of Music, he has lived and worked there since. As a saxophonist he has performed and recorded with a wide array of musicians including Steve Wilson, David Liebman, the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Tim Warfield, Tin Can Buddha and Steve Rudolph. As a composer his works have been commissioned and premiered by The New York Film Festival, saxophonist Steve Wilson, Jazz @ Lincoln Center, The Museum of Modern Art, the Vermont Mozart Festival Orchestra, the Harrisburg Symphony, the The Righteous Girls, Bucknell University, West Chester University and the Harrisburg Youth Symphony. Pandora’s Box, a new film score for G.W. Pabst’s iconic film, was commissioned by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and premiered at Alice Tully Hall in October of 2017, with Jonathan conducting a 17-piece ensemble. In 2014 Ragonese premiered his ‘Not-this’ for two saxophones, at Carnegie Hall. Jonathan is now the Director of Jazz Studies and Instructor of Saxophone at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Active educational endeavors include lectures, writings, and the development of Music Before Words, a music program for infants with educator Renee Bock. His first recording, Ardent Marigolds, was released in 2013, a duo with musical father Steve Rudolph. two men, singing, a duo album with saxophonist Tim Warfield was released the summer of 2018.

PETER PAULSEN - Bass is currently Assistant Professor of Double Bass/Jazz Studies at West Chester University and is an active member of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, principal bass of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra and has been principal bass with the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Spoleto, Italy. He is also busy as a freelance jazz bassist in the tri-state area and performs regularly with his own quintet and trio as well as many of Philadelphia’s top jazz performers. Paulsen's first CD release, Peter Paulsen Quintet "Three-Stranded Cord", on R&L Records, received international press and national airplay, as well as the second Peter Paulsen Trio release, "Tri-cycle". He has also recorded with the MPH Trio, "Curves", on GPC Recordings, and the Jeff Baumeister Quartet, "Useful Music", on Wahbo Records. His most recent release, Peter Paulsen "Change of Scenery" Sextet also on Wahbo Records, has gained international recognition in both radio and printed media, with an emphasis on a confident and original compositional voice.

 STEVE RUDOLPH – Piano - Steve moved to Harrisburg in 1978 after a tour with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and has been instrumental in the growth of the jazz scene in Central PA.  He was a founder of the Central PA Friends of Jazz in 1980, one of the country’s most successful jazz organizations.  He served as pianist six nights a week at the Hilton Harrisburg’s “Bar” for 22 years featuring many great area and national artists weekly.  Steve has toured the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Russia (including Siberia).  He is a Yamaha Keyboard Artist and has many recordings to his credit.  Steve’s compositions and arrangements have been performed by Stuart Malina & the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra among many others.  Visit www.steverudolph.com for more information.

LARRY MARSHALL – Drums  Larry started playing drums at the age of five. In 1983, he went on to study at West Chester University and started his recording and touring career as well. After a sold out tour to Asia, Larry relocated to Japan, where he made Osaka home base for siX years. While in Japan, the high end drum company, Sakae(Sah-kah-ee), approached and signed him as a Sakae Drum Artist. He spent six years as the Jazz Drum instructor at the Azul Jazz Academy; and during that time, Kansai Music Conference awarded Larry with the Jazz Musician of the year award (2012). Now back in the U.S., Larry continues to enjoy teaching as adjunct faculty member at Lebanon Valley College, The High Street Music Co. in Pottstown, Pa., Director of two Percussion Ensembles at High Street Co.. Adjunct Faculty at The Waldorf School ( Kimberton, Pa.), Small Jazz Ensemble Director at Waldorf School. Adjunct Faculty at The Hill School,( Pottstown, Pa.), Percussion Ensemble Director at The Hill School. Larry still tours and has formed the Larry Marshall Quartet as well as being a sideman for a wide variety of artists. He has toured with artists such as, Othello Molineaux, Randy Brecker, Kevin Mahogany and many others. In addition, he also continues to be a sought-after recording artist, conduct clinics and master classes in the U.S. and abroad.
