The Shootouts’ deep love of traditional country music forms the bedrock of their signature sound. Lead singer Ryan Humbert grew up surrounded by the genre, listening to its songs with his parents and grandfather. Classic country, bluegrass and gospel songs were among the first that he learned to play on the guitar.

Similarly, vocalist Emily Bates spent her younger years singing harmony with her dad in their old pickup truck, and eventually became a member of a bluegrass band in college. And while lead guitarist Brian Poston had been in a wide array of bands throughout his early days, he was mostly drawn to the flashy guitar styles of western swing.

The roots of these band members have since grown into the unique blend that make up The Shootouts – equal parts vintage Nashville, Texas swing, and Bakersfield bravado.

After finishing in 2nd place in a nationwide competition (where the finals were held on Music Row in Nashville), Cold Spring Union was told that they are "too rock to be country, and too country to be rock."

The band has embraced this as their mantra--making claims to the "alt-country" genre and what they're calling "Americana Progressive Rock."  Their sound has grit; their original music is timeless; and, their talent is unmatched.

Late in the summer of 2018, John Rossey (Guitar/Vocals) began envisioning a new kind of project; one that would remain true to its roots of Americana and country music, and breathe new life into American rock & roll.

John met Brandon Valentine (Drums/Vocals) while working together in a Central Pennsylvania based country group.  As a multi-instrumentalist, he brought an articulate approach to percussion, combining a gifted ear for dynamic songwriting with huge vocal harmonies.

John and Cody Wilt (Guitar/Vocals) had occasionally crossed paths in the greater Harrisburg area while working with other bands as lead guitarists.  Cody recalls first meeting John in a bar in Mechanicsburg: "As soon as he [John] started playing, it was all eyes on him...his tone commanded the room."  At the time, Cody was rotating between bands, but he quickly jumped at the opportunity to join up with John.

While seeking a bassist for the new band, Brandon recommended reaching out to Morgan Stambaugh (Bass/Vocals). Morgan and Brandon were friends through high-school and both studied at the same university--where they played together in multiple groups.  With thundering bass lines, classical training, and an encyclopedia of music production knowledge, Morgan was the final piece in establishing a solid lineup that would later become Cold Spring Union.
